I'd like to see if Ik can install the theme on my own site, but a crucial file is missing., All Wordpress themes need an index.php to be able to be stand-alone.

Where is the index.php of this repo?

Added it in ee5db1e on dev branch (in the meantime) I'll create a release this week with all those changes
