Makes several non-core changes in preparation for the upcoming alpha release. In short:
Update copyright notice (end year)
Review examples and docs so that they are more integrated. In particular, use literalinclude and move all code to examples so that it's checked by Travis
Other docs updates, in particular to the installation page
Travis now also builds the docs (and should break on warnings)
