.bib-file not found: Error handling when reading file fails #11

Closed sammo3182 closed 7 years ago

sammo3182 commented 7 years ago

Dear Fred if I may,

Thank you for building this useful addin! Yet, here's a problem when I tried to use it: when I activated the addin, it shows Bibliography file(s) found in YAML front matter: D:/Dropbox/Jabref.bib at the bottom, while in the searching window, a line of gray words appeared as ".bib-file(s) not found" and no result came out if I tried to search anything. I tried to locate the .bib file in the working directory and installed the developing version from Github. None of them fixed the problem. Do you have any hint what happened and how I can lead the addin to find the bib file?

Thanks,

crsh commented 7 years ago

Hi Yue, sorry for the late reply, I was traveling the last two weeks. Could you provide me with a minimal working example of an R Markdown file and an BibTeX file to reproduce the problem?

sammo3182 commented 7 years ago

According to my check, the issue is about non-utf-8 characters. You can try the following minimal example. You will see the item includes an extremely long note, which was created by google scholar rather than me.

  abstract = {South Korea is regarded as the most influential & vigorous new democracy in East Asia. The country has not only transferred power peacefully to an opposition party but has also fully transformed its age-old crony capitalism into a competitive & transparent market economy. Yet the question remains: How much progress has Korea really made in democratizing its authoritarian institutions & its underlying cultural values that for nearly three decades supported the military dictatorships that ruled the country? This study addresses this question by analyzing the Korea Democracy Barometer surveys conducted over the period of 1997-2004. The results of this analysis reveal that, both institutionally as well as culturally, Korea remains far from being a consolidated democracy. Appendixes, References. Abstract = {A key choice in the design of Web surveys is whether to place the survey questions in a multitude of short pages or in long scrollable pages. There are advantages and disadvantages of each approach, but little empirical evidence to guide the choice. In 2003 we conducted a survey of over 21,000 undergraduate students. Ten percent of the 10,000 respondents were directed to the scrollable version of the survey, containing a single form for each of the major sections. The balance was assigned to the paging version, in which questions were presented to be visible without scrolling. The instrument contained a maximum of 268 possible questions, including topics that varied in sensitivity and desirability. The survey also permitted comparison of the effect of skip patterns by implementing skip instructions and hyperlinks in the scrollable design, and also recorded time at the end of each of the five topical sections. Differences between designs are evaluated in terms of various forms of non-response, univariate and bivariate measurement properties, and proxies for respondent burden. Hi Yue, thank you for the details. An error message from RefManageR::ReadBib() is displayed in the R console indicating that the BibTeX-file could not be read (admittedly it isn't very helpful). This generally indicates that something wrong with the supplied file. The problem are the non-UTF-8 characters. You could try to read the file using the following call

RefManageR::ReadBib("path/to/bibfile.bib", .Encoding = "...")

replacing ... with the correct encoding. If you can get it to work with the correct encoding you can set the encoding to be used by the citr addin as follows once you have installed the current development version from this repository.

options(citr.encoding = "...")

I take from this that the error message printed to the R console is easy to miss, so I have just pushed a commit that prints the error message to the addin window and slightly improves error handling.

The two warnings you get after removing the note are caused by the incorrect information in the BibTeX-file and are unrelated to citr. The correct fields would be

Editor                   = {Dalton, Russell J. and Klingemann, Hans-Dieter},

and, for example,

  Month                    = {12},

.

Got the point! Thank you for the detailed reply, @crsh.
