note that, for irssi > 0.8.17, it would be good to look into #58 first which will require some changes. I outlined the required changes (beyond the provided PR) there but I'm afraid I don't have time to implement it atm

would this resolve issues like https://github.com/cryptodotis/irssi-otr/issues/62 ?

This definitely resolves #62.
