Add thumbnail support #41

Open ghost opened 7 years ago

ghost commented 7 years ago

Basic Info

This is a feature request.

I'm using Android in version: 7.1.1 (Pixel)

I'm running Cryptomator in version: 0.3.1

Description

Please show thumbnails as in the Native Dropbox Android App. Scrolling through hundreds of files named IMG_20160604_165251.jpg is very inconvenient.

tobihagemann commented 7 years ago

Thank you for your feature request!

Additional info: It's similar to the iOS app (https://github.com/cryptomator/cryptomator-ios/issues/73) and comes with the same challenges.

ghost commented 7 years ago

Perhaps you could do something similar to Windows. When jpg/png/gif files are added to the Vault, the Cryptomator app creates (or updates) a hidden "thumbs.db" file, which then gets sync'd to dropbox. Then when users open a vault on android (or iOS), Cryptomator automatically downloads, decrypts "thumbs.db", to display thumbnails. It would be far less bandwidth and CPU intensive than generating the thumbnails on the fly.

@ghost Yes, thats something we already discussed internally. Problems with this approach are that thumbnails for existing images would not be available, but this could be acceptable. An alternative could be to use the cache implemented in #48, but of course this would only work for some image files. We will see what we will do in the end.

zwentastic commented 4 years ago

In view of the fact that the app costs 10 Euros and was purchased more than 10000 times, it is incomprehensible from the customer's point of view that the implementation of such a useful feature has still not taken place after 2 years ..

sjgriffiths commented 4 years ago

This software and app is excellent in all areas except for the lack of thumbnails for images and videos on Android -- this is a serious lacking feature considering the infeasibility of being able to search through things like entire camera rolls by systematic filenames alone.

emilsenan commented 4 years ago

I need this feature too.

philthynz commented 4 years ago

I think this is the only feature holding me back from encrypting all my photo and video uploads. Would be great to have.

uhLydn commented 4 years ago

+1 Here. The only feature that i really miss..

myns23 commented 4 years ago

+1 please

ghost commented 4 years ago

Yes, Please bring this feature, it's really really important! How can you expect users to search through all of their image files one-by-one. Without thumbnails it becomes really hard and very time-consuming. I also keep image files encrypted in Cryptomator locally. So please bring this feature to locally saved files as well.

ghost commented 4 years ago

this will be a very nice feature indeed

finestgecko commented 4 years ago

Just wanted to add my support for this very important feature. I have thousands of photos in some folders and it's near-impossible to find a specific one that I may be looking for.

jwsp1 commented 3 years ago

Doesn't Cryptomator need to fully download all files before being able to show thumbnails? This probably takes ages given that phones take 5-10MP photos. Technically, would it be possible to download a compressed/rescaled version of photos? A 9 MB photo results in a ~400KB (1366x768 pixels) or ~700KB (1920x1080 pixels) file. Even on a tablet, 1920x1080 pixel photos still look pretty clear. This will heavily increase download/decrypt speed. So to get thumbnails work, I would welcome the ability to download/cache certain (sub-)folders.

serialpotato commented 3 years ago

Wont it be possible to also keep thumbnails of images encrypted in the cache directory of encrypted storage and the cryptomator app configured to automatically decrypt the encrypted cache as it lists the files. Ideally, these thumbs would be a fraction of image, <100Kb with some whatsapp picture algo that retains most detail with minimum size. It will take few more moment to load all thumbnails as the whole directory is listed. And when user clicks on a file, full image is downloaded.

So a cache directory, whatsapp like algo for image thumbnail retaining max data in small size and app to auto load all thumbs or of coreesponding directory when its visited

a-rekkusu commented 3 years ago

I'd also like to see this feature very much. I just bought the app and the lack of this feature was obvious instantly.

alexanderadam commented 3 years ago

I'm not sure whether this is relevant for someone but IMHO rcx (F-Droid) is able to show thumbnails. It's based on rclone, though. Thus this is only a solution if Cryptomator interoperability is not necessary for you.

Now, I hate myself for subscription of cryptomator. It's practically useless for photos. rcx just works!

Shihabus-Sakib-Rad commented 3 years ago

This is deal breaker for me. I am surprised this feature couldn't be implemented in 4 years!

T81 commented 3 years ago

This little feature will have a great impact. Is there any update to share?

serialpotato commented 3 years ago

There has been no update from developers. Seems like they are not interested. rcx is a great alternative which does more than cryptomator and is free.

T81 commented 3 years ago

https://github.com/cryptomator/cryptomator-ios/issues/73#issuecomment-779101411 looks promising though

cryptomator/cryptomator-ios#73 (comment) looks promising though

It does for iOS. Sad Android Users here..

Any news about the Android thumbnail feature request?

MTH607 commented 2 years ago

This is the only missing feature which is holding me back. When will it finally be implemented?

LearningAsIGo71 commented 2 years ago

Not having thumbnails for pics and videos (at the very least pics) seems to be a fairly big issue for a number of folks including myself. I use pCloud and they also do not offer thumbnail previews for their encrypted volumes. So many people are simply not encrypting their pics and videos uploaded to pCloud or they are (using pCloud's native encryption or Cryptomater) and dealing with the inconvenience of not being able to preview anything.

Maybe Cryptomator could do a fund-raising campaign to get this feature implemented? I'd be happy to contribute some dollars towards such a feature.

Chistex commented 2 years ago

I think they are absolutely not interested to integrate or to oder the thumbnail feature.

Many folks asked about it.

Chistex commented 2 years ago

Any news?

pdrive commented 1 year ago

it'd be really nice. currently using droid fs (gocryptfs) because it has this feature.

skariko commented 1 year ago

I add myself to the list of those who would like thumbnails in the Android app :)

iam0day commented 1 year ago

What's new? I would also like this feature!

eylenburg commented 1 year ago

+1 from me

At the moment, Cryptomator is unusable for me on Android. I can't do much with a bunch of files named 20220502_135648.jpg or DCIM0737.jpg and I don't understand what's the difficulty in implementing this feature. Surely there can be an least a manual "scan" of the files in order to create thumbnails (would need to be downloaded temporarily to decrypt). Or alternatively, the desktop app creates some kind of (encrypted) thumbnails database (like the thumbs.db that Windows Explorer creates) and the mobile app then uses that to display thumbnails + adds new thumbnails to it whenever a picture/video is uploaded through the mobile app.

JustFanta01 commented 1 year ago

@eylenburg I agree. Even an encrypted .thumbnails folder inside the Photos vault would probably be enough. When the Android client unlocks the vault, it checks for the presence of the folder and matches the thumbnail name with the photo name. Obviously you have to keep the files synchronized (add photo <=> add thumbnail, delete photo <=> delete thumbnail).

Chistex commented 1 year ago

Hello again, any news about the feature?

Thank you in advance.

f-m-1979 commented 1 year ago

This feature would be very important for me!

roirraWedorehT commented 1 year ago

I, too. am looking for thumbnails for pictures and videos on Android (Pixel 7 Pro).

Chistex commented 1 year ago

Hallo zusammen, interessiert es eigentlich irgend jemanden bei Crypromator, dass das Thumbnails über die verschiedensten Kanäle und unter verschiedenen Begriffen angefragt und gewünscht wurde?

roirraWedorehT commented 1 year ago

Google Translate: "Hello everyone, is anyone at Crypromator actually interested in the fact that the thumbnails were requested and desired via a wide variety of channels and under different terms?"

infeo commented 1 year ago

@Chistex While I understand your frustration, this is not the place to let it out. If you don't have anything to contribute other than rambling, please look for a different place.

Okay i'm sorry for my frustration.

This is the correct place to talk about the feature request. A response by the developers would be fine and would help all other people to understand the situation.

Thank you very much in advance.

I agree. It would be very nice to get some indication from the developers WHETHER they are working on this feature and if so, when it is expected to ship.

tobihagemann commented 1 year ago

No, we're not working on it right now. Maybe a more elaborate answer to the current situation: https://github.com/cryptomator/android/issues/478#issuecomment-1416235927

Azul-dev commented 10 months ago

This app would be perfect if only it had a thumbnail feature. Is there currently no development of this feature? I'm wondering if there hasn't been any movement on this basic feature in over 6 years... Is it technically difficult?

JaniruTEC commented 10 months ago

There is no active development work being done on this feature right now.

We understand that the lack of progress on this particular feature is frustrating. Cryptomator is developed by a very small team, and we are trying to make the best out of our limited time and resources. We ask for your patience until we get to doing this.

On a positive note: I am happy to tell you that we were able to allocate more development hours to the Android App recently and this feature might get picked up in the foreseeable future in the course of that. Please mind the word "might", tho.

Thanks for your support and patience.

ialexpw commented 7 months ago

It's a shame this isn't getting picked up after more than 6 years. It's supported in iOS and it seems like a pretty important feature for those encrypting any sort of media. I had to move over to DroidFS which supports it and is developed by an even smaller team. Even still, thought I'd add my "+1" here and hope for the future!

Coming up on 7 years here in a couple months! :)

There aren't many commits going into the Android app right now and there hasn't been a release since June 6th, 2023.. I don't have high hopes for this feature.

Tortillas-IT commented 6 months ago

gammexane commented 4 months ago

it's been 7 hours and 15 days.... oh no, wait, 7 years and 10 days... my mistake. Just joking but we really need this feature.
