Changing minimum Fan Speed #1

Add a possibility to change the default min fan rpm

kleuter commented 6 years ago

Some more idea on this;

I have a new MBP 2016 and it's fans behave quite differently, they have a min RPM value ~1200, but they actually don’t spin all the time. They turn on only after 45*+ temperature, and then turn off when MacBook gets colder.

MFC is actually able to turn them on from 0 RPM, but it isn’t able to turn them off, as apparently it sticks them to min RPM and continues to spin them at that level. Though when I manually select Auto mode, they instantly slow down and turn off.

Can you add a switch, so when temperature goes below some level, settings will go back to Auto mode (and Custom after it goes above), so fans could be actually turn off?

This is a very important option to implement. We should not be spinning our fans slower than what Apple's default fan control dictates, which may be unsafe for the device and could void the warranty.

SMCFanControl (open source!) and iStat Menus currently behave like this.

This would be a GREAT feature, since I'd like the fans to run a bit more than the current minimum to bring down the average temp :)

Same problem, once my MBP (13" 2019, 2 ThunderBolt) hits the temperature at which MFC should starting ramping up the fans, it cannot turn the fans off again when the temps go below the specified temp again. This is leading to unnecessary usage of fans and therefore, decreasing the lifespan of the fan bearings by a long shot.

At this point, if this issue isn't solved ASAP, we can only hope Apple is using HDB bearings, because if they're using standard Sleeve bearings, then MFC will kill your Mac's fans in less than a year.

This has still not been added in two years. Minimum fan speed needs to be zero.

prakharb5 commented 3 years ago

Or, add functionality to turn off fan when under given temp.

trevyn commented 3 years ago

For some reason my minimum is 4000 even when colder than a cold "start to increase" temp? What's that about?

Right now I'm leaving fan control on Auto because most of the times my M1 Max doesn't generate enough heat to require fans to be spinning all the time.

The suggestion to stay on auto and then move to a custom profile would fix this as Apple keeps at 0% until past ~65ºC.

For me this was never a problem on previous Macbook Pro as I'd usually be using one of the more powerful configurations which needed more aggressive cooling, but that's not the case with this MBP 16", even with the M1 Max and a maxed out GPU. I assume the M1 and M1 Pro would require even less cooling.

Hello,

Will it be possible, with a mac studio, to go below 1100 rpm? Turn off the fan?

The Mac studio sometimes has a hissing sound coming from one or more fans. Is it possible that you change your mind and allow individual management of the two fans?

Title: Enhancement Request: Zero Fan Speed Below Lower Temperature Thresholds with Sensor-based Value

Description: I utilize the Custom Profile feature, selecting the Sensor-based value with the CPU Core Average as the criteria. I am proposing an enhancement where, when the CPU Core Average temperature falls below the specified threshold, the fan speed is set to 0. Essentially, the minimum fan speed would only be engaged once the temperature reaches the defined threshold. This feature would greatly simplify the setup to achieve my desired operating mode, aligning fan activity more closely with the CPU temperature dynamics.
