Events have an expiration date field. At present it seems like the expiration date only keeps events off the Upcoming Events widget if the current date is past the expiration date. However, events are already removed from Upcoming Events once the event date has past, so it is not clear what the use case for an expiration date is. It would be a hypothetical event that you wanted to appear for some time before the event, but then wanted it to disappear before the event took place, which doesn't seem very useful.
