Disable indexing by search engines #6

Need to add a meta tag to _includes/meta.html to instruct crawlers to please not index our pages.

We want to restrict usage to IITB CSE PhDs only.

This is too extreme! If you want to restrict usage, then do not approve any pull requests from others. Even PhD CSE@IITB might discover the wiki through Google Search. Sometimes the content may just have broader applicability and can be discovered by common folk, do not see anything wrong with that.

I think there are two kinds of freedom of knowledge at loggerheads here, and we need to find the right balance

  1. freedom of access to knowledge
  2. freedom of expression of knowledge

As we increase viewership from a small number to a large number, (1) will increase, but (2) will decrease. Decreasing (2) in turn decreases (1) because the knowledge was never expressed. Increasing (1) in turn decreases (2), because the expressor of the said knowledge cannot reasonably understand if there will be any personal negative consequences of the the said expression.

My personal desire with this wiki is that it contain both technical matter as well as Opinions. Large viewership will restrict expression of relevant and helpful personal opinion. For example, if I make a post on advisorship styles, with pros and cons, I don't really want my advisor(s) to be able to look at it. However, such opinions are both helpful and relevant to PhD@IITB-CSE, and I'd like fellow PhD students to find such advice.

What this wiki will actually contain will be decided by the community organically. Let us wait 3-4 months when there is a critical mass of posts on the wiki. If it is mostly of technical nature, we can make it public then, after discussing with the community.
