I've removed compiled and binary artefacts from the repository. Objects like pyc files are re-created automatically, and can cause weird problems [citation needed] if left lying around. The DB file is an operational, rather than source, object, and by keeping it in the repo we risk blowing away a production DB when a new version of the source is deployed.
I've also employed a slightly more robust way of managing dependencies that pins the versions of the required packages. This avoids version conflicts and the problems that can arise by having different development environments at different versions of the packages. I've put some initial documentation about this in place; let me know if it needs fleshing out.
