creduce-2.1.0 does not compile against clang-3.4 #36

Closed 0-wiz-0 closed 10 years ago

0-wiz-0 commented 10 years ago

When compiling the latest release against clang-3.4.0, I see:

ClassTemplateToClass.cpp: In member function 'void ClassTemplateToClass::rewriteClassTemplatePartialSpecs()':
ClassTemplateToClass.cpp:248:71: error: cannot convert 'const clang::ASTTemplateArgumentListInfo*' to 'clang::TemplateArgumentLoc*' in initialization
     TemplateArgumentLoc *ArgLocs = PartialD->getTemplateArgsAsWritten();
                                                                       ^
ClassTemplateToClass.cpp:253:34: error: 'const class clang::ClassTemplatePartialSpecializationDecl' has no member named 'getNumTemplateArgsAsWritten'
     unsigned NumArgs = PartialD->getNumTemplateArgsAsWritten();
                                  ^

and other problems. I guess this is due to differences between 3.3 and 3.4. The git version seems to depend on llvm-3.4 instead. Can you please make a new release?

Thank you for the bug report!

We do plan to make a new release in the the near future. As I recall, the work remaining for this is just documentation review and update; I'm not aware of any planned code changes prior to a release. (But I need to check my to-do list.)

Of course, as you found, you can get the version that works with LLVM 3.4 today, from GitHub.

I tried today's git version against clang-3.4.2, but it doesn't compile either. I get the following error from quite a number of files:

.../include/llvm/Support/DataTypes.h:48:3: error: #error "Must #define __STDC_LIMIT_MACROS before #including Support/DataTypes.h"
 # error "Must #define __STDC_LIMIT_MACROS before #including Support/DataTypes.h"
   ^
.../include/llvm/Support/DataTypes.h:52:3: error: #error "Must #define __STDC_CONSTANT_MACROS before " "#including Support/DataTypes.h"
 # error "Must #define __STDC_CONSTANT_MACROS before " \
   ^

and from a number of other files I get:

.../include/llvm/Support/MathExtras.h: In function 'bool llvm::isInt(__int64_t)':
.../include/llvm/Support/MathExtras.h:264:33: error: there are no arguments to 'INT64_C' that depend on a template parameter, so a declaration of 'INT64_C' must be available [-fpermissive]
   return N >= 64 || (-(INT64_C(1)<<(N-1)) <= x && x < (INT64_C(1)<<(N-1)));

and similar for UINT64_C.

Hi Thomas,

What OS version are you using, Mac or Linux? What's the gcc (or clang) version that you are using to build creduce? Thanks.

Hi Yang! I'm building on NetBSD-6.99.49/x86_64 with gcc-4.8.3; the clang package I use for libclang and the headers is 3.4.2 (in /usr/pkg), but there is a newer clang (3.5 svn 209886) in /usr. I don't know if that matters. Cheers, Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I don't have NetBSD so I could only take a guess. Seems llvm-config didn't work as expected. Can you send us config.log for investigation? (If you can't upload file, you can send to http://www.flux.utah.edu/mailman/listinfo/creduce-bugs).

On my ubuntu 14.04 box, I have the following output from llvm-config:

$ ~/work/compilers/compiler-install/clang+llvm-3.4.2-x86_64-linux-gnu-ubuntu-14.04/bin/llvm-config --cxxflags -I/home/chenyang/work/compilers/compiler-install/clang+llvm-3.4.2-x86_64-linux-gnu-ubuntu-14.04/include -DNDEBUG -D_GNU_SOURCE -DSTDC_CONSTANT_MACROS -DSTDC_FORMAT_MACROS -D__STDC_LIMIT_MACROS -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -fvisibility-inlines-hidden -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -fPIC -Woverloaded-virtual -Wcast-qual

The output will be used by creduce's makefile to build clang_delta. As you can see, STDC_CONSTANT_MACROS and STDC_LIMIT_MACROS are defined there.

Thanks,

0-wiz-0 commented 10 years ago

Hi Yang! Something's going wrong here then, because llvm-config's output looks ok to me.

# llvm-config --cxxflags
-I/usr/pkg/include  -DNDEBUG -D_GNU_SOURCE -D__STDC_CONSTANT_MACROS -D__STDC_FORMAT_MACROS -D__STDC_LIMIT_MACROS -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -fvisibility-inlines-hidden -fno-exceptions -fno-rtti -fPIC -Woverloaded-virtual -Wcast-qual

Here's the config.log:

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by creduce configure 2.2.0, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.69. Invocation command line was

Thanks Thomas,

Looks like the output of `llvm-config' didn't get into Makefile. I am sorry for my endless queries. Can you check clang_delta/Makefile and see if you could see something similar to the following:

LLVM_CONFIG = /home/chenyang/work/compilers/compiler-install/llvm-3.4.1-enable-assertions-disable-optimized/bin/llvm-config

In more detail, we later get llvm's configuration by something like: LLVMINCLUDEDIR := $(shell "$(LLVM_CONFIG)" --includedir) clang_delta_CPPFLAGS = \ $(GIT_FLAG) \ -I"$(LLVMINCLUDEDIR)/clang"

From the make output that you gave, seems $(LLVMINCLUDEDIR) was empty.

Ok, I fell for one of the oldest tricks in the book. The Makefile is using some GNU make extension that doesn't work with BSD make. I haven't tracked down which part exactly, but using GNU make makes it build. Thanks for your help and patience in tracking this down.

There was a warning during 'make':

Making all in clang_delta
gmake[2]: Entering directory '/disk/3/archive/obj/nih/creduce-git/work/creduce/clang_delta'
usage: llvm-config <OPTION>... [<COMPONENT>...]

Get various configuration information needed to compile programs which use
LLVM. Typically called from 'configure' scripts. Examples:
  llvm-config --cxxflags
  llvm-config --ldflags
  llvm-config --libs engine bcreader scalaropts

Options:
  --version         Print LLVM version.
  --prefix          Print the installation prefix.
  --src-root Print the source root LLVM was built from.
  --obj-root Print the object root used to build LLVM.
  --bindir          Directory containing LLVM executables.
  --includedir      Directory containing LLVM headers.
  --libdir          Directory containing LLVM libraries.
  --cppflags C preprocessor flags for files that include LLVM headers.
  --cflags C compiler flags for files that include LLVM headers.
  --cxxflags C++ compiler flags for files that include LLVM headers.
  --ldflags         Print Linker flags.
  --libs Libraries needed to link against LLVM components.
  --libnames Bare library names for in-tree builds.
  --libfiles Fully qualified library filenames for makefile depends.
  --components List of all possible components.
  --targets-built List of all targets currently built.
  --host-target Target triple used to configure LLVM.
  --build-mode Print build mode of LLVM tree (e.g. Debug or Release).
Typical components:
  all               All LLVM libraries (default).
  engine Either a native JIT or a bitcode interpreter.

which made me look at clang_delta/Makefile.am and notice:

clang_delta/Makefile.am:LLVMCXXFLAGS       := $(shell "$(LLVM_CONFIG)" --cxxflags | sed -e 's/-Werror//') \
clang_delta/Makefile.am:LLVMLDFLAGS        := $(shell "$(LLVM_CONFIG)" \--ldflags) \
clang_delta/Makefile.am:              $(shell "$(LLVM_CONFIG)" \--system-libs 2&>/dev/null)
clang_delta/Makefile.am:LLVMINCLUDEDIR     := $(shell "$(LLVM_CONFIG)" --includedir)
clang_delta/Makefile.am:LLVMLIBS   := $(shell "$(LLVM_CONFIG)" \--libs)

Why "--" instead of plain "--"? Also, some of these variables are provided by configure and wouldn't need to be computed again.

chenyang78 commented 10 years ago

Cool! Glad you made it work. Thanks for your patience, too :)

In terms of the "--" and those re-declared variables in Makefile.am, I don't have enough knowledge to answer the question. Probably Eric can comment on that?

Btw, can you please mention GNU make in the INSTALL file?

I'm glad you discovered the problem!

Maybe we can improve the configure system and/or the generated Makefiles to check for GNU Make.

clang_delta/Makefile.am:LLVMLIBS := $(shell "$(LLVM_CONFIG)" --libs)

Why "--" instead of plain "--"?

I'm not sure I undertand this question. Do you mean, why "--"? This is explained in comments in `clang_delta/Makefile.am':

The funny quoting in `LLVMLIBS' avoids a warning from Automake:

...: linker flags such as --libs' belong inclang_delta_LDFLAGS'

The warning comes about because Automake doesn't understand $(shell).

Avoid the warning by making --ldflags' and--libs' not look like

linker options.

Also, some of these variables are provided by configure and wouldn't need to be computed again.

This is true, but I think it's harmless. Let me know if the recomputation at make-time is causing you problems.

Thanks! ---

Eric.

BTW, Thomas, can you now build C-Reduce with Clang 3.4 to your satisfaction? If so, I'm going to close the issue that you created on GitHub.

0-wiz-0 commented 10 years ago

Yes, the git version builds fine against clang-3.4. A new release would be nice, but I don't think it's necessary to keep this issue open until then. Thanks for your help!
