Add simpleaf #29

👋🏻 @DongzeHE - I created this branch as a middle step to merge the simpleaf modifications, and made a couple of additional changes (also adding some steps to the Actions workflow to see why the test is failing; things look good locally). Could you just check that I didn't misinterpret anything or change anything in a way that didn't agree with your intentions? Thanks!

The code looks good but ... "All checks have failed" seems not like a good sign :(

Seems it was another LaTeX issue...I'll merge this and push to bioc-devel then
