Start/end signalling frames

During previous discussions a proposal was made to add specific content (e.g. test pattern, full-screen colour) to mark the start and end of the stream.

There are a few questions to answer:

• Is this something we want to do?
• Should the frames with the start/end indication only be shown for the first and last frames or for longer?
• Should this be shown on top of the content and therefore the first visible frame of the annotated mezzanine content would be frame 2 and the last but one frame, or should they be inserted before/after the full set of annotated mezzanine frames?
• We can use a test pattern for this (e.g. EBU tech3373, SMPTE bars), or would a simple full-screen colour be preferable?

Current working assumptions for the above questions:

• Yes, this is useful.
• Add only a single frame to the start and end of the test stream.
• Insert these frames before/after the annotated mezzanine source content, so all annotated frames are visible.
• Example starting with a test pattern and ending with a full-screen colour: [...]
