WAVE is holding a workshop on Monday, May 3rd from 07:00-11:00 PT to cover some of the decision points which require a deeper discussion than the regular TF meetings.

Use this issue tracker to contribute discussion items. These will be collated by the TWG Chair before the meeting and converted in to a presentation deck to drive the agenda for the day.

For each item, please suggest a title, and provide some background text as well as the decision to made or call-to-action. Also state which TF you feel the work falls under.

There are several issues regarding what is supported for playback in a number of interesting scenarios. For example, period misalignments during the ad breaks, gaps in media timeline, varying level of support for subtitle formats. Different players (browsers, consoles, smart TVs, Roku, etc.) behave differently (or fail differently) when handling these cases. MSE based players can be made to deal with these as smoothly as possible but native players can rarely be fixed. DRM and multi-key is a different story and also support for it varies quite significantly among the platforms.

Is there any benefit in documenting the peculiarities of different platforms? These include support for codecs/profiles (audio and video), subtitle formats, DRMs, handling of gaps, multi-period support for DASH playback, support for low-latency playback, supported HLS version/features, support for adaptive playback or even things such as limits on the min/max playback buffer sizes (if any). `` Not only the TV models from different years (of the same vendor) but also the models of the same year might show significant differences when it comes to native player features/support.

It is impossible to test every brand and model for every feature since this would require access to: 1) A great number of test assets 2) A great deal of devices (with different firmwares, etc.) 3) And a lot of time

However, if a “live” document/table existed documenting as many devices and features as possible (maybe thru crowdsourcing), it could be a tremendous service to the community.

Is this something of interest to CTA-WAVE? How does this related to other activities within CTA or WAVE? DPCTF is probably the closest TF in this case. Test assets, a test harness and a good illustration technique are the key components here.

Just throwing the idea in case anybody else has views on this.

Common Media Server Data I'd like to introduce the topic and also walk through an early draft version of the spec which I am contributing to kick off the discussions.

Common Access Token Introduce the work group and discuss the planned cooperation with SVA. Would also be nice to begin collecting use-cases from the members around token protection.

MiniApps

I've been in conversations about the future of application development on Smart TVs where MiniApps have come up as a potential model to follow. I assume not everyone in WAVE is aware of MiniApps, so I can put together a short presentation on them for an initial group discussion.

My goal for the Spring Forum would be to make everyone in WAVE aware of MiniApps, and then at a later date (Fall Forum?) we could revisit the topic and discuss if we feel as a group that WAVE should explore promoting MiniApps or a MiniApps-like approach to building HTML5-based media experiences for Smart TVs.

DASH/HLS Interop

  1. What type of tooling should be created for CMAF packaging interoperability conformance? Should we created a extended/restricted profile for CMAF conformance in the existing tooling?
  2. What type of tooling around manifest format conversions would be useful to create? Static scripts or full service containers?

For DPCTF testing - review the wish-list of candidate items for 2021 that were not funded and prioritize in case more money would be available.
