Can't chat after busting out #1416

Fix so logged in observers can chat.

I must have broken this with my preserve chat fix (#1414). Ugh.

I've already described the problem and solution in #1414, so I've reopened that one and will revert the code for this evening, then I'll go to sleep and do the fix in the moring.
