a couple of modifs for speed, getting into the new code base.

The suggestion to move encoders and decoders into shared vars is something I stand by, but the way I did it... not so much. Suggestions welcome.

the encoders and decoders as shared is also something that I've been wondering about and thinking would be a good idea, is there any downside to it? i vote for going ahead and formally implementing them as shared

Ok, this has been merged. Sorry, I reworded the commit message a bit for the second commit, to make the subject line fit in 50 chars. But yeah, because of that commit hashes changed and this doesn't automatically close. But it's been merged I swear!
