The float32 castings #28

We need to get a handle on what is going on with the float32 casts, @jaberg has described it as a terrible thing, so we should figure out what the correct thing to do is and then go through and fix it!

I took care of some of this stuff for my benchmarking code. I'd like to finish it up a bit more and then talk with you guys about how to merge it in.
