Personal Details

Name: Asma Ansari

Undergrad or MEng? Undergraduate

Year in Cornell: Rising senior (Class of 2025)

Relevant classes: CS 2110, ECE 2300, ECE 3140, ECE 4750*, ECE 5760* will be taking during Fall 2024 **took during Spring 2024 but dropped (had exposure to course content and completed nearly two out of three labs in full)

Expertise (languages/frameworks/etc.): C, Verilog, Java, Python

Research

When do you want to do research? I am going to be in Ithaca during the summer so I would like to start working on a project then, but my goal is to join a lab for credit during the upcoming fall semester up until I graduate.

What is exciting to you about research? Research projects tend to be more open-ended, providing more freedom to change and adapt the project's scope and objective over time. I want to implement the skills I learned in class to a project that is more aligned with my personal goals for my future career, and research provides that outlet to find a space that fits well with what I want to work on.

What kind of research do you want to do? As mentioned above, I was taking ECE 5760 (Advanced Microcontroller Design) which introduced me to various projects related to hardware acceleration through FPGA programming in tandem with the ARM on the microcontroller we used in the class. Unfortunately, I had to drop the class due to an overloaded schedule, but I was able to complete almost two out of three labs assigned in the class which enhanced my skillset regardless.

Background

Was there a paper that particularly excited you? I am currently in ECE 6960 (Sustainable Computing), and what got me interested in the class was actually the professor's work in sustainable computing. He co-authored a paper covering a tool his group developed to determine the total carbon emissions from manufacturing electronics. Paper link is https://ugupta.com/files/Gupta_ISCA2022_ACT.pdf.

Which of the current research projects would you be interested in working on and why? "Filament" seems to be the most fitting project for my interest, but I am also open to exploring the other projects under "Hardware Accelerator Generator". I also am intrigued by the Signal Processing project.

Anything else you want to tell us about yourself? I am interested in sustainability within hardware, so I also am hoping to incorporate some aspect of that if accepted into the lab.

It's been roughly 90 days since opening this issue. We apologize if we haven’t gotten back to you—research openings are somewhat sporadic, so sometimes we don’t have specific opportunities to offer. But more will certainly come in the future! If you're still interested in doing research with us, please respond with "Still interested for <semester/summer>". Additionally, please update the issue by editing it and supplying us with more information, an updated resumé, etc. If you're no longer interested, do not respond to this thread and we will automatically close this issue.

Hi, Asma! Sorry we haven't gotten back to you yet—but let's keep this issue open in case something can work out for the fall!

Hi, @ara2125—I imagine it's quite likely that you've found other interesting research to do in the intervening time, but I'm starting to look for some possible collaborators on a project about genomics processing. To be totally transparent, I originally tried recruiting MEng students at the beginning of the semester and got no bites—but I did write up this description of where we're going: https://capra.cs.cornell.edu/notes/pollen-meng.html

Anyway, you can obviously ignore the MEng-related stuff in there. Any chance this might appeal? If not, no big deal—for one thing, this project isn't very hardware-y in its current stage, so if you like the idea of involving actual hardware design, I'm sure there will be other projects available sometime soon. Let me know if you're interested and we can chat.

Hello,

Thank you for letting me know about this opportunity! Unfortunately, my schedule is a bit too packed this semester, and I don't think I could dedicate enough time towards this project. I also would like to focus more on hardware design and implementations, so I don't think this project would be the right fit for me.

No worries, Asma! We'll keep in touch about future opportunities.
