Hi @rat83! If you're still interested in doing research this semester (Fall 2021), please reach out to me at rnigam@cs.cornell.edu so that we can setup a time to meet and talk.
Hey @rat83, I didn't receive an email so I assume you're busy this semester. Feel free to comment on this issue if this is not the case.
We are thrilled that you're interested in research in our research group! Please fill out this issue template. When you submit it, we will get a notification in our group chat. Please include any relevant details you can think of! Here are examples of filled out templates for reference.
For active projects in our group, take a look at our group website.
Personal Details
Name: Romano Tio
Major: Electrical and Computer Engineering
Year in Cornell: Sophomore
Relevant classes: CS 1112 (?), ECE 2300
Interested in continuing research during the summer: I may be interested but it's too early for me to be absolutely certain.
Research
When do you want to do research? (Researchers can get involved during the semester as an "extracurricular" or get more involved over the summer, when they treat research like a full-time job.) I'm okay with either during the semester or during the summer. I don't have a strong preference for when I begin.
What is exciting to you about research? (How did you get interested in it? What are you hoping to get out it?) I've honestly never done academic research before so it's hard for me to say anything certain about what specifically interests me about it, however the idea of discovering something new or furthering understanding/optimizing a process seems alluring to me. My friends in high school were involved in sort of high-school research and it seemed interesting, but because I transferred in I was unable to really begin research at the time and experience it. I would like to at least experience collegiate research to see if it is right for me, and hopefully use it as a point to launch from to pursue postgraduate education.
What kind of research do you want to do? (It's OK to say, "I don't know; I'm looking to explore!") The things I have considered pursuing research in are either computer architectural development/hardware optimizations (which is more pertinent to this lab, though from the reading I have done the CAPRA lab tends to focus more upon the interface between hardware and software) or something pertaining to brain-computer interfacing (which clearly does not pertain to this lab).
Background
Note: If you're in your first or second year at Cornell, these are all optional. If you're a junior or senior, please answer the first two (the rest is still optional).
Was there a paper that particularly excited you? (This doesn't have to be a paper from our group.) As someone currently learning Verilog, although at this point the work we're doing with it is rather simple, any attempts to make writing hardware simpler is very appreciated, and the development of ways to make higher-level languages able to write to an FPGA without being strange/unpredictable in performance will probably be something of great use to me in the future.
Is there a specific grad student or a project you're interested in working on? I don't really have any specific project in mind, but I'd prefer to work on something closer to ECE if possible. I was discussing Caiman with Dietrich during the recent CS research panel but from what I understand that's one of the less ECE-adjacent projects of this lab.
Anything else you want to tell us about yourself? I feel like I've said most pertinent information throughout this application.
