BP Docs UX issue #83

Per this ticket http://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/2651 and this CBOX community post http://commonsinabox.org/groups/help-support/forum/topic/behavior-of-docs-feature-within-a-group/ , it appears that people are confused that after creating a doc within a group, one is lead to the doc repository instead of back to the group space. This is a UX issue that we should consider and address. Please see both links above for more.

Just to be clear: the redirect is not to the doc repository (which I take to mean the Docs Directory), but to the single Doc that was just created. I believe the confusion lies in the Doc, while associated with the group, is not visibly in the group context; ie it does not have a URL example.com/groups/docs/foo and does not have the group header/sidebar.

Changing this behavior, so that the single Doc does have the group sidebar/header and URL, is very difficult from a technical point of view. I also believe, for reasons discussed elsewhere, that it is unwise, because of the varied uses of BuddyPress Docs.

However, I'm open to other suggestions for how this particular confusion might be alleviated. The group association is listed in a box at the top of the Doc after redirection; but perhaps this association could be made more visually obvious. Or perhaps there should be an alert near the top of the page after creation that says something like "Doc successfully created. Return to group" with a link back to the group (similar to other success/failure messages throughout BP).

Hi Boone --

Yes, you're right about the redirect (sorry). I do think that it would be ideal to have docs created within a group context to be redirected, on save/edit, to a view of the doc within the group navigation context (again, as I noted in the nycdh ticket, I think there is a perception about being within a group space that is important to preserve), but failing that, making it easier for people to find their way back to the group seems like a reasonable compromise. The only problem with that, I think, is that people will still have a sense of "floating" when they save the doc and view it, as they'll be moving from a group-specific context to a free-floating single doc context.
