Derivatives sometimes fail to generate #767

Intermittently, thumbnail derivatives are failing to generate. See, e.g., https://staging-etd.library.emory.edu/concern/etds/zg64tk92g

The error in this case is "fatal: No live threads left. Deadlock?"

I think this might be fixed already. I'll check.

AFAICT this was fixed by our image library fix. Also, the suggested fix is already in place. We can reopen it if it shows up again.
