I get the same error in Gargoyle and Windows Frotz, so I'd say it probably is an error in the Inform code. What interpreters don't give the error?
Ah, I think you’re right. There’s probably an “examining something” in there that doesn’t take account of the possibility of examining a direction.

If you play Tea and Toast (http://iplayif.com/?story=http://mattweiner.net/Shufflecomp%202014/Tea%20and%20Toast.zblorb) and type "look out," you get:
[ Programming error: (object number 49) has no property p78_filling to read ]
This is an Inform 6G60 game and I don't think the problem is in the Inform code.
