Status of this:

• Roice has looked at it but not in detail, and says he feels it's safe to merge; if problems are found, they can be fixed with further commits.

• I've asked Melinda to test it, but she won't. I'm not particularly comfortable with going ahead without her testing it, but I can't force her to.

So I went ahead and fast-forwarded master to this commit, manually. I see that changed the pull request status to "successfully merged and closed".
