toolbar graphics #76

Saman, I'd love to get your take on some custom toolbar graphics for the iPad app. In the past, I've avoided it to keep the toolbar using the built-in class rather than custom coding a mix of text and graphical buttons. I think we can clean up the app a bit, though, and it's worth it now.

Here's the current look:

Here's Apple's Keynote app toolbar as an example:

Keynote

I am thinking in ours, we keep it with no title (though this will likely change when we move to a Keynote-like document-centric map model). We'd also keep "My Maps" as text.

But I think we could use a custom help button (currently using a textual ? with a space on each side for padding), clustering, and layers graphics.

Layers could be based on the MBTiles logo and/or like this Carcassonne image (sorry @willwhite, couldn't resist):

Carcassonne

For clustering, maybe something like 2-3 points surrounded by a dashed/solid circle? That's a toggle button, so it needs both states.

Any thoughts?

Something else to think about here is a Library icon as well. We will soon be refactoring the UI (per "Layer & data management" in this blog post and the Library will be app-wide and where all of your data lives. Then, the current layer UI will be document-specific, in the context of the map you are working on right now.

And yet one more angle is an animated version that can show one or more downloads going on in a "percent completed" sort of way. Reeder is a good app example for this, in the way it caches images for RSS posts.

To be clear, none of the things in this comment are immediately actionable, but they represent some things we'll be thinking about soon and that will definitely need custom graphics.

Justin, before I start designing these icons, I have a couple questions.

willwhite commented 13 years ago

I was thinking of ways to actually remove the toolbar entirely. @incanus, is that an option? I wonder if it makes sense to hold off on icon design until we have some UI sketches. We can do those when you're in town.

I agree, @willwhite, that we could probably revisit this once I'm in DC next week. @samanpwbb, I was more interested in getting this on the radar and starting the discussion. No hurry right now, but I will address your style and size concerns once we home in on this a bit more.

@incanus, sounds good. Also, I agree with Will, if the toolbar can be removed, Mapbox'll look even more slick. Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with.

Closing this since we've revamped the toolbar recently and have a lot of new custom icons.
