"Additional Resources" in Portable version #219

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Run Installer for bpBible Portable
2. Select installer to install "Additional Resources"
3. After install, run bpBible

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The installer says that the "Additional Resources" include the King James
Version and Strongs' Hebrew and Greek Dictionaries; however, bpBible says "This
book is not set."

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Version .5
WindowsXP SP3

Is it the PortableApps version or the standard version?
The PortableApps version.

If the problem happens with one particular module (Bible, commentary,
dictionary, or book), what module is it?

Please provide any additional information below.

I think making these basic modules available "right out of the box" in an
installer really opens it up for non-geek friends to install & use.

Thanks

Unless your new install is different from mine, you should have installed and
visible:
* KJV (Bible)
* WEB (Bible)
* StrongsGreek (Dictionary)
* StrongsHebrew (Dictionary)

Do you see these?

This would leave the Commentary window empty and showing the message you report.

There are a few issues with including basic modules by default:
1. It increases the size of the installer for everyone (including those who
don't use the modules).
2. It necessarily focuses on one language group (we can't have a different
starter pack for German, for Chinese, for English, ...).
3. Some people want other things from what's in there.

The modules included try to strike a compromise: the KJV and WEB cater for
different English audiences, and the Strong's dictionaries are useful
companions to the KJV with Strong's. However, the more we include the harder
it will be to strike that compromise.

All that is visible in the section I think you're talking about are two things
under "Harmonies." I've attached a PNG image showing what I see after
installing as I described.

I also tried the new version 0.5.1.1 on the XP machine and a Win7 laptop and it
looks the same.

I went and downloaded the KJV zip and installed it into bpBible portable just
fine.

P.S. I like the compromise. Being able to look up what the words' different
possible meanings are so fast is one of my favorite features of bpBible.

Hi,

If I run the installer I choose language "English", then click "Next" and come
to a screen "Choose Components". By default, "Additional Resources" is not
ticked. If you tick it then the books I mentioned should be installed.

Since the installer was written by the PortableApps team rather than by me, I
cannot comment on why the "Additional Resources" checkbox defaults to unticked
and whether it should default to ticked.

I tried installing it with both that checkbox ticked and unticked, and the only
difference I noticed was that the folder took up more space when I had ticked
it. The program however still doesn't show any Bibles. I looked around in some
of the folders in the folder where I installed it and there are files with KJV
and Strong in them...the program doesn't seem to find them right off the bat
though.

Try installing to a New Folder with the .5.1.1 portable installer with the
"Additional Resources" ticked.

I have no problem with the "Additional Resources" not being ticked by default.
