I have actually implemented a solution for SAML, which is was is used by the university, on another project this week (although not for the university). It should be noted I used https://simplesamlphp.org/ for this, and it's PHP and not Python, but the concept remains the same, and it was actually quite simple to set up.

For Python we might be able to use something like this: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/djangosaml2

I honestly think it would be a lot better to use the University accounts rather than Facebook logins ++ and provide access lists for which usernames are allowed to do what.
