In this case, the entire field should be deleted, as shown in the next edit.

Should the origdate parameter ALWAYS be deleted?  Or are there cases where it 
should be corrected to, for example, archivedate?

I don't know. Origdate is not a valid parameter for cite book, so it is 
difficult to discern the intent.

Unless there is a robust strategy that the bot can use, then, I think that the 
default behaviour should be preserved.  I can't imagine that the parameter is 
used very widely, seeming as it has never been supported.
