Options for entire planet and staged downloads? #1

Hi. I'm wondering if I can use this to set up an automatically updating planet-wide Nominatim. My Ubuntu Cloud 12.04.2 LTS 64-bit server is 8 cores, 64GB ram with a 1TB drive, though I can increase those parameters, if absolutely necessary.

Also, I already obtained the planet pbf file, via torrent. Is there an easy way to override the downloading option, in lieu of this?

That is a good question. Over the next few days I shall be installing nominatim on a new server we have just acquired (although only 32GB and 500GB disk) with a view to doing the whole planet. I think the trick is to setup the diffs by understanding https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Planet.osm/diffs#Using_the_replication_diffs

The default setup we've got at the moment uses geofabrik, but that doesn't seem to provide a whole planet.

The configuration now allows for a full planet import.

There are currently no plans for staged downloads.
