Looking good, great work @joeytalbot! One thought, is it worth trying different colourschemes, e.g. in which less busy values are a blue/green or other 'cool' colour?

joeytalbot commented 4 years ago

I tried a few colour schemes, can check out others. But personally I find it looks quite confusing having a scheme that goes through multiple different hues e.g. blue/yellow/red

Have created new map for Micklefield after excluding a private road

Robinlovelace commented 4 years ago

There are other sequential options, the Purples one look good to me: http://colorbrewer2.org/#type=sequential&scheme=Purples&n=3

The Reds default is good for some things but I think we should avoid using it for all maps - probably more appropriate for business than for the choropleth maps here: https://cyipt.github.io/acton/articles/case-studies.html

The viridis colour schemes are also nice. Lots of palettes to choose from!

Can you clarify? Our routing shouldn't be using a private road, unless it is at the start or end of the journey (so that the rider can get to their destination or start!).

Pls share maps with latest data and colourschemes @joeytalbot to clarify : )

The road was misclassified as public in Openstreetmap, so I had to change it to private and redo the routing.

Many thanks Joey.

One thing I have realised needs improving on these maps is that line width doesn't properly relate to number of commuters, because these show routes overlain on top of one another, not route networks. This won't be sorted by Friday.

Robinlovelace commented 4 years ago

overline(routes) should do it... one for the hackathon perhaps?!

joeytalbot commented 4 years ago

I'm sure there are better things to do in the hackathon. I've already got proper route network maps using overline2 for go dutch and for all commutes. I just haven't worked out yet how to rejoin the segment level busyness data with these.
