IMHO transport (MTA, IMAP server, etc.) should not change contents of the message (including fields From:, To:, Subject:...) if it is not ordered obviously. In this case 8bit symbols it is irreversible are replaced on 'X'. I offer to make it configured, for example an option convert8bit in imapd.conf. By default "convert8bit: yes" - 8bit symbols changes to 'X'. If "convert8bit: no" symbols do not change and accordingly does not operate reject8bit. Patch it is ready where to send?

Read the mailing list threads about this issue, please. It is NOT that simple. The patch is useless.

You need to write a patch that, when it finds 8bit-chars, applies the proper MIME armouring using an user-configured charset, at the very least.
