From Mark: just had a thought, perhaps favouring established "long distance paths" i.e. The Ridgeway or Thames Path when they happen to be near a route might be an idea, for example this one avoids the Ridgeway for most of its route http://two-pi.co.uk/displayroute?routeId=E723BF5CD8EE32D92D1EA7BF763BB311

The ridgeway ways are part of a 'Ridgeway' relation:
