re:how to get data from a webcam to see how feasible that is OpenCV (computer-vision) has a package to access a webcam with python, it also has video loading capabilities, which I think is what we're analysing. I've not used OpenCV, but should be able to learn it.
Ideally the data-stream would just be a large 3D array of intensity at each point on the screen, over time.
package that can load mp4 (likely saved from webcam) as a "mosaic of images" in python http://zulko.github.io/moviepy/
this sounds like the above goal, if it is true

will leave this issue open until satisfied with kit
can capture on linux side, use cheese standard earphones don't appear to work
another trip to the labs (and Jude) is in order:
issue #10 appears to have superseded this issue we have also successfully achieved initial data capture, with this issue having correctly guessed the viability of webcam capture
closing this issue
research hardware options for getting the data
make a summary list of the possible ways of doing this with pros and cons -- e.g. specific webcams or photodiodes possibilities with price and sellers
how to get data from a webcam to see how feasible that is.
