Problems with Extended AEB after update to Release 20120415-13 #276

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Update from Release 20120415-12 to Release 20120415-13
2. Setup and start the Extended AEB script
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
1. In the Release 20120415-12 the Extended AEB script was working properly.
2. I updated from Release 20120415-12 to Release 20120415-13 on my both CF
cards.
3. I copied the files PRESETS and SETTINGS from my 1st CF card (2 GB, FAT) to
my 2nd CF card (4 GB, FAT32). Maybe this was the fatal error? Then I was using
my 2nd CF card in the camera.
4. Extended AEB script - 7 frames were set with the step 1 EV.
5. After this script was started, only 1 frame was shot and the DP button was
still flashing, although no more frames (2..7) were shot. So I stopped the
script by pressing the DP button.
6. I tried to setup the Extended AEB script several times and run it, still the
same result as described in point 5.
7. I decided to downgrade back to Release 20120415-12.
8. Extended AEB script now shoots every time 3 frames (no matter how many
frames are set - 5 or 7 or 9), but all 3 frames have every time the same EV.
The script then stops.
9. I tried also to reinstall the firmware ver. 1.1.1 + testfir.fir, reinstall
the Release 20120415-12 and the result is still the same as described in point
8.
10. After update to the Release 20120415-13 the result is still the same as
described in point 8.

The Canon's standard AEB is still working properly.

Is there any help, or is my camera damaged permanently now regarding the
Extended AEB script?

What version of the product are you using?
Release 20120415-13 (updated from Release 20120415-12)
Firmware 1.1.1

Please provide any additional information below.

First of all, sharing PRESETS and SETTINGS files between releases is perfectly
safe: we take great care to keep these files compatible between minor releases;
and even after a major release, 400plus just ignores and overwrites any
incompatible file that it may find in the card. So no, you didn't do anything
wrong when you copied the files from one card to another.

And second, once the camera has been prepared (update to firmware 1.1.1 +
installation of testfir.fir), there is no reason to repeat that procedure
again, as all the code is in the AUTOEXEC.BIN file. As there is no code stored
in the camera, it cannot have been damaged the way you describe.

There is just a change in 20120415-13, and it only affects the AutoISO feature;
I do not have the camera with me right now, but I very much doubt EAEB has
stopped working in this version. It seems much more plausible to me (and it
matches what you describe) that it was already broken in 20120415-12, but
nobody noticed because it only fails with certain parameters.

In conclusion, you did nothing wrong and your camera is not broken, but I'll
need more info to investigate this; could you please post all the parameters
you used for the EAEB script? Or you could also save a preset and post it here.

Parameters of the EAEB script:

2s Delay: Yes
Frames: 7
Step (EV): +1
Direction: +/-
Bulb min: 1/250
Bulb max: 1/60

-------------------

I run the EAEV script in the AV mode. These very same EAEB settings were
running properly in the 20120415-12, before update to 20120415-13.

Attached you can find the files from the CF card.

-------------------

UPDATE !!!!!

I formatted the CF card. I noticed that the camera's auto power-off feature
doesn't work, even though it was set in the standard camera menu. Maybe some
strange part of some script was still hanging somewhere in the camera's memory,
or something like that?

In the standard Canon EOS 400D menu I found "Clear settings". I selected both
the 1st and then also the 2nd option:
1. Clear all camera settings
2. Clear all Custom Functions

Then I turned off the camera, removed the battery, reloaded the battery,
formatted the CF card again.
Then I installed 400plus again (20120415-12). And... the EAEB script works now
properly again! :)

Hmmmm, should I try again also 20120415-13 ? I'm not sure yet... :)

Yes, I would try to update to the latest version; this looks like a problem
between the script parameters and the camera configuration. I'll have a look at
this later, thanks for the files.

OK I updated to 20120415-13. After running the EAEB script for the first time,
it shot all 7 frames correctly and then an error message appeared on the
display: "Err 99 - Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to <OFF> and
<ON> again or re-install the battery". I did and now the EAEB script is
working properly.

Before a script start, we turn off the auto power-off feature, and turn it back
on when the script finished; but when the camera hangs during the script, we do
not have the opportunity to turn it back on. Just go to the camera's standard
menus and turn it off (or disable this feature from the "Settings" menu in
400plus); sorry for the inconvenience.
