Slow wake from sleep #315

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
Let camera go to sleep. Press shutter button to wake from sleep.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The camera wakes from sleep (and focuses etc...), but there is a 1 to 2 second
pause before it will take a photo.

What version of the product are you using?

Please provide any additional information below.
I often walk around with my XTi and take photos of birds and other wildlife.
Therefore I want to be able to quickly take a photo of something I see. After
installing 400plus there is a very noticeable delay before I can take a photo.
Is there any way to completely uninstall 400plus so that this delay goes away?
Thanks,
Ryan

I believe this issue has already been addressed, but the change hasn't still
been officially released. Could you please try the latest nightly build? Please
inform whether it meets your needs.
Nighly builds are not recommended for actual usage, however. In the meantime,
just formatting the card should revert the camera to its original state.

Thanks.

I have reformatted the card, but the problem persists. Maybe the delay is
caused when 400plus checks the card?
Thanks,
Ryan

Did you also install latest nightly build? Problem is NOT fixed in official
releases.

I installed the nightly build. The delay is still present. Starting with the
camera asleep, if I press the shutter button half way, waking the camera from
sleep and almost immediately focusing on an object, there is a 1 to 2 second
delay before the camera will take a photo (after the lens has focused and the
shutter button completely depressed). I did not notice this delay before I
installed 400plus, but I do not have a pristine XTi to compare with.
Thanks much,
Ryan

I cannot reproduce this: my camera wakes up and takes the first shot in less
than a second; I have also been reviewing the code, and I cannot see where it
could "stall" during the initialization.

If you use a freshly formatted card, or even no card at all (and configure your
camera to shot without a card), your camera will behave exactly as if 400plus
had never been installed. Or (using a recent nightly build) you can hold down
the TRASH button, and 400plus will not load.

There is probably something in your configuration, that interacts with 400plus,
but I cannot think what it could be.

It could be the lens too, try with other lens and report please.

Meanwhile when I manage to port the booting to cache-hacks, our starting
procedures will be in separate task, so it wont interfere with the standard
camera boot process, thus it wont change the boot time.

FYI
Without a CF card in my camera it will shoot in 1/2 sec. That is from sleep
mode where i fully press the shutter.
With CF card installed (SanDisk Extreme III 2GB) the camera will shoot in 3/4
sec., thus the initialization of the CF & is 1/4 sec.

Could be a defect CF Card.

Have you tried another card ?

When 400plus is installed, the camera must load an execute a file from the
card; and I'm afraid that there is nothing we can do about it. We can try to
reduce the time that file takes to execute (we already do), but a certain delay
is unavoidable.

Going from 1/2s to 3/4s to boot and make a first shot is an acceptable
compromise to me. But I can understand that it may not be acceptable to others;
unfortunately I do not think we can significantly reduce that time. If someone
really needs the fastest possible boot time, uninstalling 400plus seems like
the only solution.

On the other hand, 1 or 2 seconds to make the first shot is not acceptable to
me, and indeed it is not what I (and others) are experiencing. Thus I would
like to investigate why it is happening to some people.

I would like to ask to the original poster to make another test: using the
latest nightly build, set the camera to M mode, and the lens to MF (or do not
even use a lens at all), then let the camera power off, and fully press the
shutter button. How long does it take to make the first shot, please? Thanks.

My apologies for taking so long to respond - I had to move suddenly so I didn't
have time to think about this.

Yesterday I performed this test, but with a blank (formatted) CF card:
"I would like to ask to the original poster to make another test: using the
latest nightly build, set the camera to M mode, and the lens to MF (or do not
even use a lens at all), then let the camera power off, and fully press the
shutter button. How long does it take to make the first shot, please? Thanks."

It took a full 2 seconds for the first shot. However, when I removed the CF
card the camera took only about 1/2 a second until the first shot. So, it seems
that my CF card is the culprit. Unfortunately at the moment I don't have any
other cards to test with because they are packed away in a storage unit.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help. What I can't explain is why this
delay seemed to start after I installed 400plus. But, it could have been simply
a coincidence or the delay didn't really start with the 400plus installation,
but close enough that I conflated the two.

No problem, no need to apologize; I just do not like to leave the issues
pending. Wish I could be of more help, but at least now you have narrowed the
origin of the problem. Best luck!
