R2Q3 correlation coefficients #37

  • p. 14." The correlation coefficients between intensities related by symmetry operations of the lattice are affected by data incompleteness " ? Not sure what the authors want to say here. In which sense are correlation coefficients affected by data incompleteness? Surely the number of data pairs (which the correlation coefficient is based upon) depends on the multiplicity, and missing data are often associated with low multiplicity, but the sentence appears like an improper shortcut, since low completeness will not lead to a change of correlation coefficients - only to a higher standard error of their values.

The point we were trying to make is that all symmetry operations of a lattice can only be tested if there are a sufficient number observations of reflections related by those operations. The reviewer is correct, the quality of these CCs decreases as multiplicity decreases. Eventually some operations cannot be tested at all because multiplicity drops to 1 (or below, hence data incompleteness). We have changed the text to refer to the more general issue of low multiplicity affecting the CCs, rather than picking out only the extreme case of incompleteness.

TODO: change "incompleteness" to "low multiplicity"
