Feature request: Markup extensions

So, I find that Pod::WikiDoc is almost perfect for the way I want to use it, but of course there are a few differences in the way that I'm typically used to writing Wiki text that always trip me up. So it occurs to me that I could Just Fix That. :-)

There are three basic options, as I see them:

• I could offer a patch to the grammar that would allow both versions of the markup to be used simultaneously (interchangeably, even).
• I could offer a patch to the module that would allow some basic configuration options which could influence the grammar, allowing the user to choose which "flavor" s/he wants.
• I could go write my own damn version of Pod::WikiDoc and just leave you alone. :-D

Which of these options would you like to see? (or is there a fourth option that I've overlooked?) I'm fine with any of them, so just let me know what your thinking on the matter is.

If it matters what specific additions I was looking to make, here they are:

• Underscore for italics. Obviously many wiki's use this (e.g. GitHub, Google Code, Confluence, TWiki, et al). I suppose some programmers like to stay away from it due to use of underscores in identifiers, but I find that the combination of marking your identifiers as inline code (which you really should do anyway), and enforcing the GitHub rule of not allowing partial word italicization means it's not a big deal.
• Hash to introduce numbered list items. Again, fairly common (e.g. Google Code, Confluence, GWiki, et al). Shouldn't really conflict with anything in POD, since there are no comments in POD, except for in verbatim blocks, which would all be indented anyway.
• Backquotes for inline code. A bit less common, but obviously GitHub uses it, it's found in Standard Markdown, and a few other wiki's. Again, I can't see how anything would really conflict with it, and its only other downside would be if you want to do inline code with backquotes (and how often does that come up?).

And that's all I had in mind.

Thank you for putting so much thought into this. My quick reaction is that your #2 is preferred, or else to refactor Pod::WikiDoc into something that separates the processing from the grammer, so it's easy for people to plug in their own grammars. I don't object to your particular enhancements, though I worry about getting underscores right.
