In Japan, books have been sold at the consignment sale. This implies that every book is likely to be visible in bookstores and that publishers do not have to pay a lot of attention to book catalogues. As a result, book metadata have not been considered terribly important in Japan. With the advent of digital publishing, Japanese publishers started to pay more attention to book metadata, but book metadata in Japan are still in its infancy.
