Review and testing welcome, but please do not merge the PR until I commit some unit tests.

@rdeltour I know you said not to merge until tests are written but I merged it into v1.10 anyway. We'll need to test the script manually before releasing, or simply not release it if you think it's not ready. What do you think? Should I remove it from the v1.10 branch and leave this PR open instead?

@josteinaj right. we can test manually (I already did back when I created this script) for now. OK to merge.
