Implement patch-pool-apply #31

This PR implements patch-pool-apply support as authored by @Guidy in issue #29 , with several fixes. I could not track down an email address so that @Guidy may be properly credited for authoring e896a60.

This looks good; I haven't personally tested it, but its safe behind an optional flag for those who wanted the feature, and the code looks sane :) Thanks for sorting this guys!
