how can one new to this app and sms gateways / providers best shop for rates?

I am NOT looking for free texting.  For that I use jabber (not sms).

I live in the USA.  I want a static ten digit number in my messages; not a 
slurry of short codes.  

(Ideally, for future use,I want a provider / gateway that can be manipulated 
via xmpp transport)

WITHOUT having to visit each connector namesake website I would like to compare 
rates, and features.
