Support Import of Offline DVDs via UPC Scanning #523

Moving Pictures is great. I am thrilled with the tool and really like the
backdrop images as well. Since I am not a programming, and have limited
design skills, thought I would contribute some ideas. Let me know if there
are other ways I can help out.

DVD Profiler is a nice catalogue tool. It can allow UPC codes to get to
the exact cover art etc. http://www.invelos.com/

The link is here incase you were not familiar.

Ideas are as follows:

1) Less difficult: Import the XML based export from DVD Profiler to Moving
Pictures including the cover art that is specified by UPC code. A sample
XML file is attached.

2) More difficult: Is there a way to input the UPC code in the Moving
Pictures database to cue up a more exact match in the movie importer? This
would save steps in DVD Profiler and just make the whole process work
within Moving Pictures.

Hope this is filled out correctly and doesn't waste anyones time. Thanks
again for the great plugin!

Scraping a local XML file is supported in the current svn revision (and will be
in
the 0.8 release) this means you can use any local metadata you like to add
movie
details, covers or backdrops. You have to write a script once but i think there
the
community will quickly come up with several common 3rd party scripts.

We haven't thought about UPC as a search property maybe that's something we can
add
in the future.

apondman is right, with the next release it will be possible to import movies
via an
XML file like you are referring to. If there is demand we may consider writing
such a
script ourselves, but most likely this will need to be created by the community.

As for UPC scanning of DVDs, this is a fantastic idea and would be a great way
to
quickly import offline DVDs. I am not sure about the feasibility, but we will
definitely look into it.

Retagged the version number for this issue. This is not a rescheduling, we
are just changing our version number scale.
