What device(s) are you experiencing the problem on?
Samssung GTi5503T
What firmware version are you running on the device?
2.1-update1
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install SL4A, phpforandroid
2. create a script using setScreenBrightness
3. run the script

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Immediate brightness change is expected. Instead I see no change until I go in
to my settings to change the brightness. The changed brightness IS changed on
the drag bar, but not the actual brightness until that bar is then moved.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

I see the same thing on HTC Dream with python. Actually setScreenBrightness is
still useful, because if you sleep the screen, brightness will get updated.
(Press hangup/menu to do it).

Seen same thing on ZTE Blade, running Cyanogen Mod 7.
Setting brightness has no direct effect. Status from API is No error, and
reports previous value.
