Do you mean name I want on my name tag? Is that just first name for my name tag? Do I need to fill it out if my name is John Smith and I want to be called John? What would I want to put there that I wouldn't have where I put name anyway? If my name is Elizabeth and I go by Beth, I probably already just wrote Beth.

This is intended to be a friendlier name that the site will call you, but it could hypothetically be used in other places. Would it be fine if there were some help text?

Yeah that would fix it entirely.

Wait do we want a friendlier name for the site to call you? That always just feels weird and creepy to me.

We could also remove the field altogether. But sometimes people like having alternate names (see Facebook)... we could do something like that? (I.e. put it in parentheses after the normal name)
