Believe it or not this may have been caused by a bad last.fm password. I saw a bunch of scrobbling errors in my subsonic server's log. I updated my last.fm password and the issue appears to be cleared up. I'll report back in a few days after additional use and observation of my device's behavior.
A bad last.fm password was definitely it. You may want to investigate if there's anything on the client side that can be more forgiving of failed scrobbles. Otherwise let me know if you believe it to be a completely server-side issue and I'll report there instead.
Steps to recreate:
1) Play an album in your collection 2) Start casting to Chromecast 3) Navigate to a different album in your collection and press 'play'
New album will not play. Dsub client will be stuck showing 'buffering'. A workaround is to disconnect from the Chromecast and reconnect.
Notes about what I've tried and my environment: 1) I have tried turning caching while casting on and off, as well as gapless playback 2) I have tried multiple devices with multiple versions of android 3) I have tried all versions of the dsub client back to 5.3.1 4) My home contains multiple chromecasts, including a group of two for playback on multiple floors 5) I happen to have a Plex server as well, and my Plex phone app can perform this operation successfully to the same Chromecast
