Made these changes because I was experiencing issues on my machine. I had originally planned to do all my work in a separate branch and have @Flave229 review it there so that I didn't pollute his branch but we've agreed that I can just make submissions into his branch and we'll deal with any fallout/breaks.
I'll auto merge this, delete my branch and then go back to working in the build_system_refactor branch.
