I've cloned the repo into ~/.emacs.d/private and added scimax to the existing dotspacemacs-configuration-layers.

I restarted spacemacs but i still get the following error on startup:

Warning: Unknown layer scimax declared in dotfile.

Seems like this is an issue with your config rather than this layer.

Does the same procedure work with your other layers? I no longer use spacemacs, so without more info it's hard to know what is happening.
