What steps will reproduce the problem?

Please provide any additional information below.
I am a bit confused what I am getting generated sitemap.xml which then has
one entry pointing to sitemap_000.xml is this expected, why is this? What
sitemap out of the two should I submit to search engines? Also even
though my sitemap_000.xml has data in it the admin console is now saying 0
urls in sitemap?
