I'll look into that. Thanks for the report!
I just wanted to add that I observe the described behavior under Wayland and Xorg, too. Please let me know if I can provide more information to help to solve this problem.
I am on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS running with Gnome 3.36.4 and I can not toggle on the fly showing only windows in the current workspace or all windows by "Ctrl + w". I have unchecked to display only windows from the current workspace and disabled my only installed Gnome shell extension (Material Shell) for testing. If I press "Ctrl + w" the amount of displayed open windows spreaded over my workspaces in switcher remains the same.
My "semi"-workaround for strict pattern matching is to let switcher display the workspace number and then filter by workspace numbers, which usually works. This is somehow annoying, since I need to remember, which number the current workspace has.
