I worked off a feature-branch for three years and the scope of that "feature" kind of spiraled, so this commit message is pretty useless. Will probably write a blog post about some of the work done here. Merging into main so I can get back to working on sanely-scoped PRs and hopefully keep a more useful Git history going forward.
