NS-K330, 32MB to 64MB DDR chip #69

Hello, 

I have NS-K330 and want to resolder memory chip (now there is 32MB) to 64MB 
DDR, so the question is - did system detect all (64MB) RAM it self?

Thanks heaps!!! This version mounts the drives from within SNAKE! Just like the 
32MB version does. But i haven't tested anything else yet.. Just wanted to let 
you know that this bit now works. It is detecting the 64MB as expected as well.

Well found some bugs so far. The FTP service locks up and drops out after about 
300 files transferred. Can`t connect to FTP again after it has dropped out. 
Can`t get to the normal SNAKE menus via IP address. Left it for 30 mins.. Still 
doesn`t respond. Only thing to do is power cycle it!

Should i report this issues? Even though i`m sure the 64MB build is classed as 
"NON STANDARD" and it`s version 1.1.0 not 1.2.0 based??

Just want to know were to go from here...

No idea... as soon as the Snake-Gurus are back in action, I am sure they will 
help us all. (and release the 1.2.0 sources... or let me access the source 
repository)

I have got an email from the SnakeOS owners and due to family commitments (aka 
- life), are out of the snake action for a bit (should be returning in November 
sometime)

That's understandable. Yeah that "Life" thing takes alot of time...

Give me time to try and help source / Post TSOP DDR400 32M X 16 (64MB) chips to 
all the willing people! Should i start a wiki on here on how to do it? Chip  
numbers that should work? Data sheets of the chips (added some in this thread 
already) etc etc??

Seams like a good idea...

do you think these chips will work? ... I can arrange to get them removed by a 
hardware guru friend if they will work. (Found and old DDR chip from a laptop 
lying about... got 8 of these)

Well this is a BIG NO. 

For starters it is DDR266 (What speed does the DIMM say?) 

You have to use DDR400 (PC3200). This is a 16M X 16 Chip. That is the same size 
as the default chip! (32MB). You need 32M X 16 Chip. Wish i had better news for 
you.

I attached a PDF in an earler post with the HYNIX chip you NEED to look for :-).

If you have lots of DIMMS, The easyest thing to start with is: Is it DDR400?? 
If no.. Then it won`t work. 

There is info i wrote in an earler post on what size of desktop DIMM you should 
be hunting for. SODIMMS should be 512MB DDR400 8 chips total.

How do i write a wiki on this some were??? I think this may help everyone.. 
What do you reckon? Put all the info you need in one spot!

Bummer! :-) it was a long shot though. I have to get another LAN-NAS to 
experiment on, but I wonder if its overclock-able.

@ Gavin: Yep sure sounds like it! That's the specs you need!!!

That's cheap too!!! Can you buy it in 1 offs though?? Most places either won`t 
ship small QTY, or don`t ship internationaly... or both!

@ Tuxbox: I have a DDR 333 DIMM here full of chips! (32M X 16) I wondered about 
over clocking them too (I don`t think 266 will clock to 400). 333 might.. But 
didn`t want to risk it.. I wonder what the "true" bus speed the CPU is using?? 
I just spec'd DDR400 because it`s what the original chip is.. I don`t know what 
the CPU is actual clocking it to. I saw a whole heap of bus speeds being setup 
in the code/log when the NAS boots.. Is it in there? Or can a SW person help us 
here?

PS Removing chips from my donnor SODIMM at the moment for the 2 people that 
have shown interest... Very slowly :-)

Can`t wait for a 64MB build of 1.2.0. Still having bugs with 1.1.0 64MB Ver, 
Transmission won`t seed. It just keeps trying to DL all the files again. Then 
stops with an error "File exsist"... No surprise there!!  I want to seed it!!!

Well i think the postage cost of 1 chip to anywhere OS from AU has killed off 
the 2 people who were interested in chips! (or they are getting them locally).

I`m guessing if people could buy complete units already "snaked" and upgraded 
to 64MB ram. People would probably buy that. But that's allot of work to do 
that! 

It would have to be a "love job". As you can`t sell Snake, DDR 400 SODIMMS 
arn't cheap. It would almost double the price of the unit! (If you sourced it 
from good old DX). Pitty they weren't built like this from factory! Probibly 
only cost an extra 50C!

I don`t want to be the only one with a 64MB Version ;-)

I know it has been along time... Not sure if any one else has Upgraded there

Hi. I see you have 512mb ddr - good. Are 8 chip on board? More or less? If 8 - 
this is simple: 512/8=64MB each chip and should work. Try resolder and write 
some info about progress :)

After upgrading did snake-os/transmission stop dying after a long uptime?
What were the real gains in doing that?
Does anyone could sell me a single 64MB chip that actually works on NS-K330?

Sorry for reopening this after some time, but I've got a question.
Why using a 64MB chip should work? Switching from 16Mx16 to 32Mx16 needs an 
extra bit at address bus (or as I see some pins are called bank bus). Does the 
unit has this extra pin connected to the CPU? And if so, how many address lines 
has the CPU connected (to know the maximum memory possible on the unit)?
