What's the best element to use as a container for my chat messages?

Certainly article. Article elements are self-contained and syndicated.

What's the best element to store the timestamp in?

footer looks like my best bet. Timestamps aren't crucial to understanding a message, but they aren't asides either.
I could put the timestamp in the header, but I feel like that would get annoying having to hear that for each message when it's usually unimportant.
